Austrian consortium Alpine Mayreder Bau GmbH/Verbundplan GmbH and Bulgaria´s National Electricity Transmission Company (NETC) got officially underway on the Thursday the construction of the EUR 220 mln Tsankov Kamak hydro complex, Dnevnik Daily reported.
Tsankov Kamak is located on the Vucha river near the town of Smolyan, some 250 km south-east of Sofia, and will consist of six hydro stations with a combined capacity of 89MW and a dam lake with a 111 mln c m capacity. The facility´s annual output is seen at 185 mln KWh of electricity. NETC will own the complex once it is completed in five years´ time.
The Austrian side is expected to start hiring next week local subcontractors on a non-competitive basis.
The project will be implemented under Austrian-Bulgarian memorandum for understanding and bilateral co-operation to conduct mutual actions on the Kyoto Protocol. Austria is to buy 228,000 tonnes carbon dioxide emissions from Bulgaria annually at $10 per ton of reductions
