Although most of the processes and mechanisms of recharge are relatively
well known, obtaining a reliable estimate of the magnitude of recharge - natural and induced by irrigation - involves a great difficulty. The difficulties lie in the spatial and temporal variability of hydroclimatic conditions and especially in the spatial variability of the variables that determine the recurrence, extent and quality of groundwater recharge.
