Water planning is a legal requirement that is established with the overall objectives of achieving good status and adequate protection of water bodies in the river, meeting the water demands and balance and harmonize regional and sectoral development. These objectives will be achieved by increasing the availability of the resource, protecting its quality, saving their jobs and streamlining its uses in harmony with the environment and other natural resources. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) establishes that water planning should be guided by criteria of sustainability in water use through integrated and long-term protection of water resources, prevention of deterioration of water status, protection and improvement of the aquatic environment and its ecosystems and reduce pollution. It should also help mitigate the effects of floods and droughts. The North Water Plan currently in force, approved by Royal Decree 1664/1998 of 24 July and is divided into North Water Plans I, II and North North III (North I is to cover the field of Demarcation Hydrographic Minho-Sil).
