Danube day: celebrating 10 years of Danube River Protection Convention
Thu, 01/07/2004
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Danube River Protection Convention signed in 1994 by 13 countries and the EU, the first Danube Day is celebrated across the countries bordering the river. Through its participation in the Convention, the European Commission has been actively working to improve the environmental quality of the Danube, and will continue to do so. Even if more than half of the countries sharing the Danube basin are not EU Member States they have all decided to implement the EU Water Framework Directive adopted in 2000. The Directive aims at achieving good quality of waters resources by 2015 through an integrated cross-border approach to water management. For 2004 the EU holds the Presidency of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), the international Forum of the Danube River Basin Convention.
