Threat of water woes for region

A three-day international conference on water management in southeastern European countries was held in Athens, Greece. Experts warned that the Greek government's poor management, along with wasteful irrigation practices and the demands of the growing tourist industry, were straining the country's water resources. Professor Ilias Mariolakos of the University of Athens, a geologist, urged better water conservation. Anastasia Lazarou-Bakali of the Ministry of Environment, Planning, and Public Works said that the government was renegotiating agreements with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Bulgaria to increase Greece's share of cross-border rivers
